Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales were indicted this afternoon by a local grand jury in Willacy County, in the Rio Grande Valley, on charges of abusing inmates in a privately run prison in the county, 1200 WOAI news reports.
Cheney was indicted for his role as an investor in the Vanguard Group, which owns an interest in private prisons in south Texas.
Gonzales is charged with using his position as Attorney General to stop an investigation into privately run prisons. Cheney and Gonzales are charged with ‘organized criminal activity.’
Willacy County District Attorney Juan Guerra declined to comment.
The investigation has nothing to do with political detainees or terrorism suspects.
Several other officials were also indicted, incluidng prominent south Texas state senator Eddio Lucio, a former U.S. Attorney, and two judges.
