Pure bred dogs may be pushed aside for the hip new dog of the moment … the shelter dog.
Pedigree, the dog food maker, has taken out a full page ad asking president elect Obama to adopt a shelter dog, sending a strong message that now is the time to take the problem of recycled animals seriously.
Beth Johnson with the Animal Defense League says now all the animal groups are climbing on board saying a shelter dog is the way to go.
“Just because these dogs are in a shelter doesn’t mean that they are less of a dog than a purebred dog.”
President elect Obama is also telling the press that “Our preference would be to get a shelter dog.”
Johnson says a shelter dog in the White House would be a sign of the times and very 21st century.
“We think it would be a great idea for the Obama family to go to a shelter and find a dog that would tug at their heart.”
She says it sends a great message to other American families that if a shelter dog is good enough for the White House it might just be good enough for them too.
