former mayor began the process of building creekside parks
Former Mayor Howard Peak was one of the first city
officials to promote the idea of a ring of hike and
bike trails running along city owned creeks, an idea which
may honor him with being the namesake of those trails:
the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails. PR manager for
the city's Parks and Recreation department, Kelli Irvin, says the
idea is being studied now.
"The committee that is being appointed will make a recommendation
that will be forwarded to city council and they will take that up
in September," says Irvin. A public hearing on the issue was
held last night at the Central Library.
"Mayor Peak has a long history of working toward
recreational opportunities for the citizens of San Antonio," says Irvin.
She says that even when he was
with the planning department, Peak pushed
for hike and bike trails in San Antonio.
"As mayor, he solidified that vision of the hike and bike
trails and won support for the sales tax that is used to
fund these trails," she says.
