will raise profile of city in Washington

The fact that Mayor Julian Castro has been tabbed to deliver the high profile Keynote Address at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte will do more than boost the political future of Castro, officials say it will also boost the economic profile of San Antonio, officials tell 1200 WOAI news.

“When we’re up there asking for help, whether it be the military, transportation, education, whatever the issues might be, the fact that he is playing a predominant role in the campaign is a big big plus,” County Judge Nelson Wolff told 1200 WOAI news.

Castro says he will focus in on his own personal story when he addressed the convention on the opening night.  He says he will point out how U.S. ‘investments,’ in education and elsewhere allowed him to graduate from Stanford and Harvard Law School and become successful.

That’s music to the ears of UTSA President and long time Castro supporter Dr. Ricardo Romo.

“I know in his message somewhere there he will be talking about education,” Romo said.  “It is a good message, he’s a true believer in it.”

Castro joked that there will be ‘no pressure’ on him when he delivers the speech.  Keynote convention addresses propelled Barbara Jordan and Ann Richard to national prominence, and Barack Obama’s 2004 keynote is generally credited with propelling him into the White House four years later.
