between Hubertus Road and Schwab Road in Schertz
Three people are dead and five are hospitalized following a huge chain reaction accident on Interstate 35 north of San Antonio which was sparked by a wrong way driver, 1200 WOAI news reports.
The accident happened between Hubertus Road and Schwab Road in Schertz, and sparked a major rush hour traffic jam.
"We had a wrong way driver coming southbound in the northbound lane, and it struck a Dodge Durango carrying a family of five," Schertz city spokesman Brad Bailey told 1200 WOAI news.
He says the family, including three children, in the Durango were injured, but apparently not seriously.
"The woman who runs the rest stop here on I-35, along with a bus driver carrying a full load of passengers stopped the bus and got out to help," Bailey said.
"As they were trying to pull the wrong way driver out of the vehicle, a truck came around the scene and struck two of the good Samarians along with the initial wrong way driver, killing them instantly."
He says the family was rushed to Northeast Methodist Hospital, and he says all five of them are expected to be okay.
He says no charges are expected to be filed against the trucker, who was not hurt.
"Right now it is being investigated, but preliminarily, it doesn’t appear to be a chargeable accident," Bailey said.
He says it is not known whether the wrong way driver was drunk.
Texas has been plagued by fatal accidents caused by wrong way drivers in the past year, including one in San Antonio last year that killed a police officer, sparking the Texas Department of Transportation to consider various proposals to prevent people from entering freeways on exit ramps.
