claims physical tests 'unfairly kept qualified women out of police officer jobs'

The Obama Administration’s Justice Department today sued the city of Corpus Christi, claiming that a physical exam which was in place for all police department trainees from 2005 through 2011 unfairly discriminated against women, 1200 WOAI news reports.

The lawsuit claims that the test violated Title Seven of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by requiring that the women pass a test which doesn’t mirror the ‘real life experiences’ of a police officer.

“This test has unnecessarily kept qualified women out of entry level police officer jobs,” the lawsuit claims.

Even though the city of Corpus Christi stopped using the physical test last year, the Justice Department demands that the city find all the women who were ‘unfairly’ prevented from jobs as police officers and not only offer them jobs on the police force, but with back pay and ‘retroactive seniority.’
