higher prices seen as one reason
Over the past two years, local drug abuse counselors have seen huge increases in addiction to hard drugs, like heroin, in the more affluent areas of Bexar County, 1200 WOAI's Michael Board has learned.
"The harder drugs have actually increased in price, so places like Alamo Heights, where they actually have a little more revenue, they are purchasing these items," said Jeff Schnoor with the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.
He says heroin addiction has begun popping up in places like the Dominion, Stone Oak, and Crown Ridge as well.
"It has actually increased quite considerably," he said.
Schnoor says the key is to make sure that anti drug messages and major rehabilitation and intervention efforts get into those neighborhoods, where previously, addictions have focused mainly on alcohol and prescription medications.
Schnoor says he is also seeing more heroin and other 'hard drug' use around the city's universities.
"Like around UTSA and up there around The Rim," he said.
