Animal Care Services has some advice

San Antonio's Animal Care Services says dog owners need to be extra careful in this hot weather.  Dogs die every year because they're left in hot cars or put outside without adequate water and shade.  Spokeswoman Lisa Norwood says cars can heat up very fast.

"It's hot and the first thing that you do when you get in the car is put on your air-conditioning. So imagine what it's like to be your animal sitting inside of that vehicle."

She says in San Antonio, that kind of treatment is also against the law.

"Fresh water and having shelter for your pet, that is not just a good idea, it's the law. You must provide those things."

Anyone who does see a dog trapped inside of a hot car may call the cops
who are authorized to smash windows and those owners will be fined.

She says dogs need cool fresh water when they're out in the yard.

"Sometimes here at the shelter we slip in a few chips of ice into the water for the animals."

She says dogs will also tip their water bowl to cool their fur. She advises
getting no-tip bowls.
