will retain 478 local jobs, add 322 new jobs

Southwest Airlines Monday opened its new call and services center in San Antonio, which will employ hundreds of people, 1200 WOAI news reports.

It is an expansion of the center which Southwest has operated for thirty years on Medical Drive in the Medical Center, which Southwest has outgrown.  The new center is located at Interstate 35 and O'Connor Road on the far northeast side.

"Southwest Airlines' commitment to the City of San Antonio grows stronger every day," said Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly.  "For more than thirty years, Southwest has served San Antonians by creating jobs and providing the best customer service in the industry.  San Antonio has served Southwest as well, by providing us one of the best workforces in the country both at and off airport."

The employees at the center will take reservations, handle change orders and complaints, and perform other customer service work.

Mayor Julian Castro says the development will retain 478 jobs and will create an additional 322 jobs in San Antonio.

Just last month, Southwest announced that it's AirTran subsidiary will begin providing non stop flights to Mexico City and Cancun, the first international flights for the airline, which was founded in San Antonio.
