cost of an adult ticket up to $10

Less than a week after opening its shiny new South Texas Heritage Center, the Witte Museum is jacking up ticket prices.

1200 WOAI news reports that San Antonio City Council tomorrow is set to approve a measure raising the cost of an adult ticket by $2 to $10, and raising the cost of a children's ticket by $1 to $7.

Witte officials declined to discuss the ticket price increase on Tuesday.

One of the reasons given for the ticket price increase is the fact that, when it was a free standing building, admission to Pioneer Hall was an extra $5.  Now that Pioneer Hall is part of the new Kleberg Heritage Center, admission to it is included in the basic Witte admission fee.

The Witte says the $10 ticket will be 'based on the admission fees at comparable venues,' and point out that there has been no ticket price increase in three years.'

"If fees are not increased, the Witte Museum will need to explore alternate sources of operational funding, or implement reductions in service to offset increased expenses," the museum said in its request to City Council.

Council will also consider granting Witte management permission to increase fees in the future, without the permission of City Council, if the ticket price increase doesn't top 20% over three years.

The ticket price will not affect the estimated 60,000 children who visit the Witte each year in school field trips, and Witte will continue to offer Free Tuesdays.
