Texas is awarding $125 million in grants to rural sheriffs and prosecutors statewide, in an effort to help them hire and retain personnel. The Texas Comptroller announced the grants last week. The state legislature last year passed a bill to fund the grants with bipartisan support. The $300 million legislation established grants for raising minimum salaries and buying new equipment. The rest of the money will be granted next year. Counties with populations of under 300,000 are eligible to apply.
