Under a new state law that takes effect on September 1st, Texas will start charging electric vehicle drivers an annual fee of $200. The state legislature passed Senate Bill 505 this year, requiring EV owners to pay the fee when they register a new vehicle or renew their registration. The fee is intended to replace the gasoline taxes that EV drivers aren't paying. Gasoline taxes support the State Highway Fund, the main source of money for road construction and repairs by the Texas Department of Transportation.
