Two Pedestrians Tried to Cross Busy Streets Overnight, Both Hit by Vehicles

Police handled two separate cases overnight of pedestrians who tried to cross darkened roadways away from marked crosswalks, only to be hit by passing cars. In both cases, the women who were hit are in the hospital in critical condition, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The first incident happened when a woman in her late fifties tried to cross Wurzbach Road just west of I-10, and was hit by an SUV that came over the hill.

About a half hour later, police were called to the 300 block of North Zarzamora, on the city's west side, where a 34 year old woman was trying to run across the busy road and was hit by a car.

Neither of the drivers will face criminal charges.

Police say in both of the cases, there was a marked, lighted crosswalk within a few hundred yards which would have allowed the women to safely cross the roads.
