H-E-B Plans Pedestrian Walkway Over Cesar Chavez

H-E-B Grocery Company is planning an enclosed pedestrian walkway bridge over Cesar Chavez Blvd. on the south edge of downtown, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The walkway will span Cesar Chavez between Dwyer and Main Avenues just west of the Riverwalk, and will connect a planned multi story parking garage to be built north of Cesar Chavez with H-E-B's corporate headquarters at the Arsenal on the south side.

According to City documents, the walkway will be at least 17 1/2 feet above the pavement, and its arched design will allow it to not have any piers that obstruct the road's right of way.

The construction costs, including a $5,000 right of way permit fee, will be paid by H-E-B.

The City also stresses that nothing in the design will impede the view of either vehicle or 18 wheeler drivers of signs , stop lights, and other items on the street.

No word yet on when construction will begin, but expect it to be there for a while.  The right of way easement the City is prepared to grant is for fifty years, renewable for another fifty years.
