San Antonio country superstar George Strait is clearly pumped about his '100 percent' benefit concert for Hurricane Harvey relief next week at the Majestic Theater downtown, News Radio 1200 WOAI reprots.
Strait sat down with reporters last night to discuss the concert, which is being underwritten by the Cavender Auto Family, so all of the proceeds can go to people and organizations damaged by the storm in the Coastal Bend and in Houston. The concert will also be simulcast by ABC-TV as part of its 'Hand in Hand' hurricane relief telethon.
Strait says he was truly moved by the destruction and flooding, which affected a number of his friends, especially in the Corpus Christi area.
"The different communities down there where I have friends and some family, you kind of feel helpless," he said. "So this was a way that I thought I could do some good and help those people, and see if we can't get everybody back on their feet again."
Strait heaped praise on Houston Texans player J.J. Watt, who's fundraising campaign has raised more than $19 million for Harvey relief in Houston. Strait joked that now people in Houston want to rename a road for Watt, which he said 'sounds like a good idea.'
Strait also said he can't say enough about the other country stars who have agreed to donate their time and their talents to participate in the show."We've got Miranda Lambert, we've got Chris Stapleton, we've got Robert Earl Keen and Lyle Lovett, so its going to be a good show," he said. "I've worked with all of those guys before and its going to be a good show, trust me."
Tickets are on sale at the Majestic box office, for between $200 and $1000. The concert, dubbed 'Hand in Hand Texas' begins at 7PM on Tuesday September 12.
As the Majestic put it: ""Hand in Hand" will bring the country together to raise funds, spirits and help rebuild Texas in the wake of this unprecedented devastation. Proceeds from the telethon will benefit United Way of Greater Houston, Habitat for Humanity, Save the Children, Direct Relief, Feeding Texas and The Mayor's Fund for Hurricane Harvey Relief (administered by the Greater Houston Community Fund) through the Hand in Hand Hurricane Relief Fund managed by Comic Relief Inc."
